Connection with Blue Moons and Blood Moons

On Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, a blood moon, blue moon, and supermoon will all appear at the same time to create a big, bright, and red moon. The last time this happened was in 1866.

Blue Moon

Blue Moon

A blue moon has three definitions: a monthly blue moon, a seasonal blue moon, and an actual blue moon. A monthly blue moon is the second full moon of a two full moon month. A seasonal blue moon is the third full moon of an astronomical season with four full moons. An actual moon that is coloured blue is very rare. It can happen if there are enough dust and smoke particles in the air of a certain size. This is called Mie scattering. Blue moons happen every two or three years.

Blood Moon

Blood Moon

A blood moon is actually a lunar eclipse. It is just called a blood moon because it appears red. A lunar eclipse is when the Earth, sun, and moon are aligned so that they are all in the middle. The moon gets no light because it is blocked by the Earth's shadow. The reason it appears red is because of rayleigh scattering of sunlight. There are two or more blood moons a year.
